The genus Ceratium is restricted to a small number of freshwater dinoflagellate species. Previously the genus contained also a large number of marine dinoflagellate species. However, these marine species have now been assigned to a new genus called Tripos. Ceratium dinoflagellates are characterized by their armored plates, two flagella, and horns. They are found worldwide and are of concern due to their blooms. Ceratium Schrank (Figs. 3G and 8A–D) Thecal tabulation 4′, 5″, 5′″, 2″″; only genus with 1–2 horns formed from postcingular plates, with an apical horn (apical plates) which may have an apical pore and antapical horn (anatapical plates), heavily thecate, plates ornamented, mixotrophic, pale yellow to golden, no eyespot.

Classification: Ceratium-dinoflagellates are members of the dinoflagellate group under the " protists ". Ceratium horridum (Cleve) was isolated by H.A. v. Stosch 1965 in Helgoland, Germany. The strain is deposited at SAG Göttingen (www.gwdg.de/∼epsag/phykologia/epsag.html). Isolation of Minicircles. C. horridum was harvested from cultures by filtration through a 22-mm mesh gauze.

Microspheres added to natural plankton assemblages at a concentration of 5 x 106 to 107 ml-1 were rapidly ingested by a var Ceratium furca is a primarily photosynthetic dinoflagellate also capable of ingesting other protists. During 1995 and 1996, we documented the abundance of C. furca in Chesapeake Bay and determined grazing rates on prey labeled with fluorescent microspheres. Abundance usually remained below 20 cells ml−1, although the species was capable of localized late-summer blooms (≤ 478 cells ml−1 Change History.

ID; 1618] Body flattened; with one anterior and one to four posterior horn-like processes; often large; chromatophores yellow, brown, or greenish; color variation conspicuous; fission is said to take place at night and in the early morning; fresh or salt water. Distribution of scandinavian waters: Maximum length: 0,54 mm. Compare with the size of a hair. Appearance: Living ceratium-dinoflagellates are yellow or brown in colour.

The dinoflagellate nucleus is unusual. The nucleus of the Dinoflagellata has many odd features unique to the group.

Ceratium massiliense (Gourret) J0rgensen (Fig. 11-13) This species varies considerably in morphology. J0rgensen (1920) recognised several forms and varieties, but only 3 of these forms (f. mac-roceroides, f. armatum, and f. protuberans) were retained by Schiller (1937) and Wood (1954).

The DNA does have repeated sequences like other eukaryotes, but does not seem to have histones (basic proteins which the DNA coils around) -- though reports vary as to whether or not basic proteins exist in the group. Introduction to the Dinoflagellata. Dinoflagellates are unicellular protists which exhibit a great diversity of form. The largest, Noctiluca, may be as large as 2 mm in diameter! We studied the phagotrophic ability of dinoflagellate strain Karenia mikimotoi KM-Lü (isolated from the South China Sea), using fluorescent microspheres, bacteria isolated from the culture of K. mikimotoi and a marine microalgae Isochrysis galbana.
